MojoMotor the one week reflection
It feels a bit like old news, but late last week, MojoMotor became publicly available. I had intended on following up Mojo’s release with a blog post outlining some of our experiences building it (I probably still will) but every time I try to sit down and write about a feature, or an implementation, or the genesis of a particular idea… every time I try to do that, I end up looking at how much Mojo has already grown and I smile.
So you know what, forget those boring technical things[1], and let’s talk about what keeps making me smile. Its a quote from Rick Ellis during EECI2010 in San Francisco.
Its the community, stupid!
Man I love being part of such a vibrant and tight knit community. Want a sample? MojoMotor is less than 6 days old, and is already taking on a life of its own! Literally within an hour of launch, Mojo was being used in the wild. Shortly thereafter we’ve seen:
- EE Insider’s excellent video tour MojoMotor Overview.
- Many commercial and Open Source Addons developed, including work from the prolific guys at MojoAddons.
- The MojoMotor showcase site (aptly named MojoShowcase)
- Two MojoMotor layouts/themes sites, that will be producing themes shortly.
- Probably a dozen more diamonds[2] out there that I’m missing (please comment in the forums and share your work).
- ... and most importantly, a super active, super vibrant forum and Twitter community.
Stunning. Believe me when I say that I know how good we have it. Let me re-iterate here. MojoMotor isn’t even a week old. And like any new product[3], you expect a few bugs to get found. Mojo is of course not exempt, but what is telling is the reaction. People wanted to help fix them, and help make MojoMotor better. Videos were made, code was examined - it makes me proud to be involved.
Now that we’ve released, I need to give a huge public “shout out”[4] to the beta testing team. MojoMotor is better because of you. Heaps of credit are also deserved by the entire EllisLab team. There is so much more to releasing an application then just coding it up. Naming, planning, brain-storming, testing, bug squashing, building the site (Leslie “Flinger” Doherty is a force of nature), quality control, sales, support, covering for my work while I played around with MojoMotor… there are dozens and dozens of things that needed to be done. The team handled everything with poise, professionalism and excellence. Exactly what I’d expect.
Finally, if you’re reading this, then a giant personal thank you for your support. You have our promise that MojoMotor will continue to grow, and we’ll remain dedicated to making your professional and personal web lives better.

[1] Warning, I’m a big nerd, and I won’t be able to forget about them long. Those types of blog posts are inevitable.
[2] This blog post is now diamonds!
[3] Start a sentence with “And”? Oh yes I did! Take that Mrs. Webster!
[4] Do kids still say that?
